5.9 Earthquake, Impending Hurricane & School is Starting!!!

What can I say? It has been such a crazy, crazy day!

This morning on the news, the meteorologist was talking about Hurricane Irene possibly coming up the east coast this weekend and all I could think about was how happy that would make me! Crazy as it sounds, but I just really want to get my laundry all caught up again!

I started the day at school in a couple of meetings. I was able to get a few questions answered. Every year, our school changes something about grades or classes or some random action/duty that we teachers have to do. I would love for just one year to be able to come back after summer break and feel like my job as a teacher is not going to turn my life upside down! I also started/finished a diagnostic test for my Data Analysis class that my supervisor needed me to do. I had all of my papers ready to be copied for the first day of school. I was feeling so inspired after last night.

We had 9th Grade Orientation last night. This is the first time in a few years that I will be teaching 9th Graders. The last few years have mostly been upperclassmen. I felt inspired and happy after meeting with 20-some students. I actually was highly excited about the new school year. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching! But last year was a trying year for me. I think that part of it was Lucas starting Kindergarten. I feel like I can handle anything that is thrown at me.

I WAS WRONG!!!

This afternoon, I took Lucas to his Open House. We met his 1st Grade teacher, and I got a great vibe from her. I felt like Lucas and I were going to have a great year. After we left his school, we headed to mine. I still had a few things that needed to be done before school tomorrow. I can always count on Lucas to help me at my school. We arrived at school to see the teachers and staff outside. Thoughts started going through my head...fire, bomb threat, gas leak. Little did I know that we had just had a 5.9 earthquake five minutes before. Lucas and I didn't feel anything since we were in the car. After talking to a couple of teachers, I tried calling my hubby and my daycare. I needed to make sure that my man and my other two boys were okay. I couldn't get in touch with either. Our principal said that we could go home if we wanted to. I started talking to another teacher that lives in the county beside us. She was headed home, and I expressed my thoughts about how she was going to get home if the bridges were shut down. It then popped in my head about my in-laws living in that same county, in a condo, on the third floor. So, I tried calling my mother-in-law. I was able to get through to her! Both of them were ok. They were eating lunch when the earthquake happened. They were still trying to get hold of everyone. I was just glad to talk to someone in my family! Between the two of us, we got in contact with family members. It didn't hit me until after I talked to her how much I was shaking! I have lived in Maryland for most of my life, and I am used to rain, snow, hail, ice storms...NOT EARTHQUAKES!!!

Well, school starts tomorrow, and I'm not nearly as ready as I like to be. My first little boy will be starting 1st Grade. I really hope both him and I have a great year!!!

Oh Where, Oh Where has my summer break gone!?!

It seems like only yesterday I started making my long t0-do list for the summer. One of the top items: Post on blog more!!! Well...that didn't work very well. Out of around 20 things, I did 4. I hate to say it, but I spent most of my summer break catching up on shows and reading a few books.

The beginning of my summer started with a trip to "Paradise" in our RV for 4th of July weekend. "Paradise" is a beach located in Dameron. It wasn't really a trip to paradise this year. Erik was stung by a Man O' War. He went to the hospital on Sunday afternoon before we could have our big cookout. Luckily, we are only 45 minutes away from this paradise and went home that night, so he could rest. Later that week, I was at the car dealership to get 2 of the 3 recalls done on my minivan.

The next week, I met my BFF in Culpeper, VA for our annual girls' day out. Culpeper is the halfway city between her house in Virginia and mine in Maryland. We started the day out at our favorite coffee shop called Raven's Nest Coffee House. Sarah, of course, had a decaf (she is expecting twins this fall!). Next stop was pedicures (Sarah's first!) and then a little lunch. An hour of retail therapy, and then we had to say good-bye. :( A lot of talking happened that day. Sarah has been my best friend since my junior year of college, and most days, I wish she lived closer. The ride home was very eventful. I got caught in a bad storm and then had to sit in traffic before the Nice bridge because of an overturned UPS truck!

Sunday the 17th started my favorite part of summer break-Our annual trip to the Outer Banks! Erik and I have been going there together since we started dating in 2002. It is so wonderful and relaxing to go somewhere that seems so familar, but you are only there once a year! This year we stayed at the Sea Scapes condos. Usually, we have a house close to the beach, but this year we went as a family of five without other friends or family to help out or have fun with! But, that was ok! It was a week of fun with my three boys and hubby! We went to the beach and the pools. We took the boys miniature golfing and to the Lost Colony. The boys enjoyed walking around on the Elizabeth II ship and going into the museum. Pirates are a favorite for all three of them. We were lucky to have good friends of ours, Jen and Scot, come down on Friday night to spend sometime with us. They also gave my hubby and me a little time to ourselves Saturday night, so we could go see the Harry Potter movie! Loved it!

The following week, I was at the dealership for my last recall! This one lasted almost 4 hours, but I spent it getting some school work done. On Sunday the 31st, I went with my hubby, in-laws and my sister-in-law and her husband to see WICKED!!! I thought it was wonderful! My hubby and FIL didn't enjoy it as much (or at all)! We had family portraits done on August 7th. They turned out wonderful!!! I wish I knew how to post those pictures on here.

So that was my summer break in a nutshell! I do look forward to a new school year! Hopefully, it will be better than last year.

These are some of the books I read this summer:

  • Kendra Wilkinson's autobiography

  • Summer at Willow Lake by Susan Wiggs

  • Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants novel based 10 years later)

  • Do Tampons Take Your Viginity? A Catholic Girl's Memoir by Marie Simas (Very Funny!)

  • All 6 books of the Mom Zone Mysteries by Sara Rosett (A new favorite mystery series)
